Description
The Gauteng Department of Health is inviting applications for the Nelson Mandela Fidel Castro bursary programme for the 2025 academic year. This initiative aims to assist students from disadvantaged communities in Gauteng who wish to pursue a medicine qualification in Cuba. It acknowledges the importance of addressing the shortage of medical professionals in rural and underserved areas, a challenge that the bursary seeks to alleviate. Established by former presidents Nelson Mandela and Fidel Castro in 1996, the programme underscores a commitment to improving healthcare in South Africa through education and training. Applicants must meet specific eligibility criteria, including being a South African citizen aged between 18 and 30, permanently residing in Gauteng, and having completed their Matric with the requisite subjects. The bursary covers comprehensive support including tuition and living expenses for successful candidates, thus providing a pathway for students to gain international experience while fulfilling the critical healthcare needs of their communities.
